I never knew about anything online gaming until a Markiplier video popped up in my Youtube recommended for Don't Starve. I bought that game after watching some of his videos, and bought Gmod soon after.

terraria or fallout new vegas. dunno which was first, but multiplayer terraria minigames was fire
