Addressing Transparency on Admin Playtime

Addressing Transparency on Admin Playtime

Dear Administrators Bolas, Brr, and Ons:

We are writing to express our concern about transparency revolving around the role of Administrator. We are requesting clarification on its functions, duties, and the required amount of playtime for an Administrator to be considered “active.” What is required for an Administrator to be able to actively participate in decisions that carry massive weight and affect the day-to-day operations of the server and its players? We will explain further below for clarity on what we mean, in the interest of full transparency.

With the recent promotion of new admins, we think it is important to discuss playtime requirements. Throughout history it has been known that admin’s playtimes seem to drop off soon after their promotion; not necessarily immediately but within the first few months. I find this to be both concerning and problematic. It is an obvious point of strain between the community, and its admins for good reason.

In the past, a largely unenforced rule has been set by Dinkleberg requiring a minimum of 10 hours of playtime in a two-week time period for Admins. While I think Dinkleberg had the right intentions for this rule we think he made a fundamental flaw. That flaw being the word “minimum” the problem being in my opinion 10 hours every two weeks is too much time spent on the server. If admins spend a large amount of time on the server they establish relationships, friendships, and even cliques. While toxicity in the community has been long addressed and handled, this is still a concern that we have. Admins with considerable activity on the server bring their objectivity into question when it comes to server disputes, which are quite common. These disputes have historically caused significant division and tension in the community and even resulted in mass resignations from staff members. We are sure everyone in the community no matter their alignment on this issue agrees these are unhealthy and damaging to Dinkleberg’s Garry’s Mod.

Our suggestion to correct this fatal flaw in the rules is a very simple change, it would be to change the word “minimum” to “maximum”. The rule would then read as follows “Admins are required to have a maximum of 10 hours of playtime on the server every two weeks”. This in layman's terms would cap the playtime of admins to 10 hours for every two weeks. This would help ensure the objectivity of admins and in disputes, as well as provide them enough time to thoroughly debate and think through and make decisions, instead of having to worry about any play playtime commitments.

The Role of Dinkleberg in Admin Activity

Another question of interest involves the role of Dinkleberg himself. In his thread announcing the demotion of Scoovie, he indicated that he “plans to keep tabs on Admins activity once again.” Additionally, he stated that “For those admins who do not maintain 10 hours per 2 weeks on the server, they will be moved to the "inactive admin" rank and will not be allowed to cast votes on apps, unban requests, etc.” He closes his remarks by saying “This is because these opinions of players should be formed by their activity on the server.” We wholeheartedly agree. So, this begs the question, what is Dinkleberg’s role in monitoring Admin activity? Is he still in charge of it? Do the Admins self-monitor? Who is the check and balance on the Admin’s activity?
How to Curb Admins Playtime

For our latest additions to the administrators of Trouble and Terrorist Town; Mr. Brr and Mr. Ons. I think it is critical to figure out the proper way to reduce your playtime in a way that is least noticeable to the community and to reduce a sudden change in your lifestyle. Below are graphs showing the playtime of the two junior admins over the past 7 days.

As you can see from the graphs, Battens’ playtime remains rather consistent while still high. Bryanbrr’s playtime is more concerning as it has jumped significantly over the past week. To correct both of these issues I suggest the following to be your playtime over the next 7 days. The goal is to wean you off of TTT down to a maximum of 42 minutes a day on the server.

To reach the target goal of 42 minutes a day Bryanbrr can over the next 7 days will need to reduce their playtime by approximately 10 minutes a day to achieve the target. However, for Batton’s the issue is much more serious. For him to reach that compliance level explained in this post he must reduce his playtime by approximately 30 minutes a day. This may seem like a large ask, but is certainly possible.

if he spends more time with her she might get to know his personality and that is a risk he is not willing to take.

Even if you cannot get on during the weekend bryan, you could allocate extra time by equally dispensing the time for the couple of days you missed to days prior or after the human bonding period. If done properly you would not even have to add 15 additional minutes of gameplay.

hahaha you can't stop me, if you reduce my playtime I'm just going to work on making useless rules to try and justify my position.

God I hate seeing the word transparency on these forums. It’s a video game. Join, play and give out proper punishments to problematic things on the server. You guys already allow cheaters to play way longer than they need to.
